TOP NEWS: STRANGE NEWCOMERS ARE IN ELAM!

Today in 1000 BC, we are witnessing a growing number of new immigrants from Central Asia. Who are these people and what are they doing here? The Persian Times investigates.

        ***

The Persian Times has found that these newcomers call themselves "Aryans" which means "noblemen." These Aryans have probably come to the fertile Zagros valleys in search of better pastures. The newcomers look different from the Elamites, the original residents of this area. And they speak a language different from Elamite. They are mostly nomads, but many of them are also warriors with strong horses, chariots, and iron tools. We have discovered that the Aryans are divided into two tribes, the Medes and the Persians. These two tribes are very strong and ambitious. The Persian Times predicts a bright future for these Aryans.

        destruction of Susa

OTHER NEWS: DISASTER! THE GREAT CITY OF SUSA DESTROYED! WILL IT BE THE END OF ELAM?

The Elamite city of Susa has seen many disasters in its long history. But perhaps the worst was in 647 BC when the Assyrians of Mesopotamia destroyed it. Our reporter was in Susa in that fateful day, and this is what he saw.

        ***

I am hiding behind a ruined wall in the center of the city surrounded by death and destruction. The Assyrians have destroyed everything including all the temples. The statues of gods and goddesses have been smashed. The royal palace is on fire; its precious treasures looted. The beautiful gardens of Susa are leveled and the trees are burned. The King is dead. The 20,000 residents of Susa have mostly fled to the mountains. Those who remain are to be killed or enslaved. The Assyrian King, Ashurbanipal, will soon enter the city in triumph. Unfortunately, this marks the end of the Elamite civilization. Susa will rise again, however. And the Persians who have been recently gaining more and more power will be heir to the Elamites' civilization.

2700 BC: The Elamite kingdom is established.

2004 BC: The Elamites attack Sumer. The Sumerian city of Ur is destroyed.

1770 BC: "Gracious Mother" rules Susa for more than 20 years.

1270 BC: King Untash Gal establishes a new city named Dur-Untash.

1160 BC: King Shutruk-nahhunte captures Babylon and takes King Hammurabi's famous Law Code stele to Susa.

1133 BC: King Shilhak-Inshushinak captures Assyria.

647 BC: The Assyrian king Assurbanipal captures Susa and destroys the Elamite civilization.

        ALL ABOUT THE ARYAN RELIGION

We have received many letters from our Elamite readers asking us to explain the Aryans' religion and beliefs. The Persian Times has interviewed an Aryan priest to find out.

        ***

Q: Is it true that you Aryans worship only one God?

A: Most of us worship one God. But there are still some Aryans who continue worshipping the old Aryan gods like Mithra or Anahita. However, we Magi are trying our best to convince these people to stick to one God.

Q: What is the name of your God and what is His symbol?

A: Our God is Ahura Mazda, and His symbol is fire.

Q: Is it true that you Aryans do not worship in temples?

A: We do worship in temples, although we don't have large and elaborate temples like the Elamites. Some of our people are nomads, and they are always on the move, so they worship on the mountaintops.

Q: Is it true the Aryans do not bury their dead but leave them on the mountain slopes to be eaten by animals?

A: The Aryans bury their dead with all their valuable possessions just like the Elamites. But we Magi don't bury our dead because we have much respect for nature. We do not want to pollute the Earth, so we don't believe in burying our dead.

** BC means "before Christ." The ancient people didn't count time in this way.

*** As the Elamites lived so long ago, historians cannot be sure of the exact dates. You may find that the dates here vary a little from those found in other sources.
