TOP NEWS:A NEW PERSIAN CAPITAL IS COMING SOON!

Today in 515 BC, His Majesty King Darius I has ordered the construction of a new capital. This city will be the richest and the most beautiful in the entire Empire. Our reporter has recently visited this new city and sends us this report.

        ***

The new ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire is named Parsa. However, our Greek subjects are calling it "Persepolis" or the city of Persians. Parsa is holding several palaces, audience halls, parks, and even a museum. Thousands of workers from around the Empire are working to complete this beautiful city.

The palaces of Parsa are adorned with gold and silver decorations, silk curtains, elaborate rugs, expensive tapestries, and colorful tiles. The richness of this place is very impressive. However, The Persian Times has learned that Parsa will be only used for the New Year celebrations, coronations, and royal burial ceremonies.

        PARTY ON!

Today in 503 BC, Queen Artystone, the youngest daughter of late Cyrus the Great and the favorite wife of His Majesty King Darius I, has thrown a birthday party for her husband. Our reporter was there and sends us this report.

        ***

The Queen's party was held at one of her exclusive palaces at nearby Parsa. Unfortunately, the party was by invitation only and reporters were not allowed inside. According to Farnaka, the King's uncle and the head of the court administration, more than 2000 guests attended the birthday party-mostly members of the royal court and foreign dignitaries. 100 sheep were slaughtered and 2000 jars of wine were brought in for the guests' consumption.

There was surely a lot of singing, dancing and merrymaking. Many gifts were exchanged. The Persian Times wishes His Majesty a happy birthday!

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE ROYAL ROAD

The construction of a road connecting Susa to Sardis in Lydia has been recently completed. This 500-parsang*-road is called the Royal Road. Here are some facts about this wonderful road.

The Royal Road is the first asphalt road in the world.

This road is the safest road in the entire Empire. Many watchmen protect the road so you can't find any bandits anywhere. Tourists, postmen, and government officials can travel day or night.

Every 18 miles you can find an inn where you can eat, sleep, and find fresh horses. These posts are called "angareion" in Persian.

Communication has improved significantly on this road where one can find state of the art smoke and light signals to send messages to far away places.

So go ahead. Pack your bags and check out this wonderful road for yourself!

        WHAT IS DARIC?

The Persian Times has received numerous letters from our readers asking us what daric was. Here is what we have found out.

Daric is a new gold coin named after His Majesty King Darius I. Daric is making the trade much easier because it has standardized our coinage. However, you can still use your silver shekels, but be aware that 1 daric=20 shekels.

        DOCTOR DEMOKEDES HAS FLED!

An anonymous source from the Royal Court has informed The Persian Times that the Greek doctor, Demokedes, has fled the country. Demokedes came to fame and fortune a few years ago when he successfully treated the broken ankle of King Darius I. Later he managed to heal Queen Atoosa's breast disease. However, today in 493 BC, we have learned that he has fled to Kroton where he was born. The spokesman for the Royal Court has no comment on this matter.

old persian cuneiform PERSIAN** CUNEIFORM? WHAT'S THAT?

His Majesty King Darius I has recently ordered the construction of a new kind of cuneiform to be used for monumental writings. The Persian Times has asked the Royal Chief Scribe to explain this newly invented cuneiform to our readers.

As many readers know, cuneiform is a kind of writing with wedge-shaped characters. In the past, we Persians had to utilize Elamite or Babylonian cuneiform. However, today we have our own cuneiform invented by King Darius.

Persian cuneiform is much simpler than the Elamite one. It has only 36 characters, which represent both vowels and consonants. It also contains 5 logograms, which stand for commonly used words. Persian cuneiform has to be written from left to right.

        MAKE ME BEAUTIFUL!

We Persians are keen admirers of beauty and fashion. Lady Irdabama, a member of the Royal Court, is The Persian Times' beauty consultant. Here she gives you some of her best beauty tips.

Color your lips and chicks with red ochre.

Use green malachite, a copper compound, to paint your eyes.

Take care of your skin. Unlike the Egyptians who love to get tanned, we Persians want to preserve our fair skin. Never stay in the sun. Don't leave home without a parasol.

Your hands feel dry? Then use the wide variety of creams available in the market. The one I use is made of lion fat, rose water, and saffron. It's very expensive, but I recommend it to those who can afford it. It makes miracles!

If you don't have time to take bath, use perfumes instead. As you know, we Persians are the inventors of perfumes, and we use all kinds of perfumes. Unlike the Babylonians, we avoid those sticky scented oils. I recommend rose water or acacia perfumes for both men and women.
