Fire Festivals Around the World

The Sikhs and Hindus in India celebrate a similar fire festival. On January 13th, they light a bonfire and throw food into the fire and sing and dance to celebrate the end of winter.
Each November, in Devon, England, in the afternoon people carry barrels of tar around the town and set the barrels on fire near bars and celebrate until midnight.

In Guatemala, every December people set up bonfires to burn the bad spirits and drive them away from their homes and to get ready for Christmas. They call this festival Quema del Diablo.

In South Korea, in the island of Jeju, each February people set a hilltop on fire to destroy the harmful insects and the old grass and prepare for the upcoming harvest. There are prayers and torchlight marches and various competitions.
