What's Mehregan?

Picture
Mehregan is a very old festival. It always occurs in October.

Thousands of years ago, the ancient Iranians celebrated Mehregan in honor of one of their greatest gods, Mithra, the Sun-god. Mithra was also the god of contracts and friendship.

Later Prophet Zarathushtra rejected all the false gods including Mithra. But people continued to celebrate Mehregan as the festival of kindness and love.

During the Persian Empire, people celebrated the New Year on Mehregan. They danced and sang all day and exchanged gifts. Even the king joined the party! Mehregan is also the day when an early Iranian king named Feraydun defeated the evil Zahhak.
